Ritz Paris leans into history because it genuinely has it. Open since 1898, the hotel’s identity is inseparable from César Ritz, Escoffier, Chanel, Hemingway and Place Vendôme. The experience is intentionally more ceremonial and timeless.

Plaza Athénée, opened in 1913, has a different mythology: Avenue Montaigne, couture, red-geranium façades, Dior and the glamorous visual language of Paris fashion.

Historic personalities vs fashion-led Paris

Ritz Paris currently has 142 rooms and suites, including 16 Prestige Suites. The room collection uses the hotel’s historical identity as a differentiator: the Coco Chanel Suite, for example, spans 188 m² with two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a hammam and Place Vendôme views.

Plaza Athénée is larger, with 154 rooms and 54 suites. Its room range is more explicitly divided around classic Parisian style, Avenue Montaigne outlooks and dedicated Eiffel-view categories.

Plaza Athénée wins this clearly

Ritz does offer Eiffel views from selected accommodations, and some top categories combine Paris rooftops with the tower. But the Eiffel Tower is not the organizing principle of the Ritz room inventory.

At Plaza Athénée, it is much more deliberate. Current room inventory includes dedicated categories such as the Signature Eiffel Suite, listed at 130 m² / 1,400 sq ft with an explicit Eiffel Tower view, plus the Haute Couture Eiffel Suite and other Eiffel-facing accommodations.

One Michelin star each — but very different evenings

Ritz Paris houses Espadon, one Michelin star in 2026, led by Eugénie Béziat. But its food-and-drink identity is broader than the Michelin count: Bar Hemingway, Salon Proust, Bar Vendôme and the Escoffier legacy are part of the reason guests choose the hotel.

The current MICHELIN Guide lists Jean Imbert au Plaza Athénée at one star in 2026. There is an important current operational nuance: Plaza Athénée’s own site now presents Anthony Di Prospero at its Michelin-starred restaurant under Executive Chef Jocelyn Herland. We therefore use Michelin for the current star status and the hotel for the current operating team.

Michelin verdict: tie on current star count. For the broader hotel evening, we give Ritz the edge because Bar Hemingway is such a distinctive part of the stay.

Plaza Athénée is the more overtly romantic choice

Ritz Paris is romantic because of its mythology: Place Vendôme, historic suites and the idea of spending an evening inside one of Paris’s most famous hotels.

Plaza Athénée makes romance more explicit. Its current Paris Romance offer includes American breakfast for two, Champagne, Tea Time by Angelo Musa and a 3pm check-out, while its dedicated Eiffel-view categories add the visual element many couples are actually looking for.

Neither is our top family hotel — but both can work

Plaza Athénée currently publishes a structured Family Time offer with two connecting rooms or family configurations, breakfast and children’s gifts, subject to current terms.

Ritz Paris can arrange customized babysitting, and its room inventory includes substantial two-bedroom Prestige Suites such as the Coco Chanel Suite. The 16-meter pool is also a significant practical advantage for family downtime.

Plaza Athénée is an official Palace; Ritz Paris is not

Atout France’s official 2026 Palace list includes Hôtel Plaza Athénée. Ritz Paris does not appear on the current list.

That distinction is factual, but it should not be turned into a simplistic quality ranking. Ritz remains one of the city’s most important luxury hotels regardless of the administrative distinction.

Ritz Paris vs Plaza Athénée: our final choice

There is no universal winner because these hotels sell different versions of Paris.

For a traveler saying, “I have always wanted to stay at the Ritz,” we would choose Ritz Paris without overthinking it. Its historical identity, Place Vendôme setting, Bar Hemingway and 16-meter pool are exactly why the hotel remains difficult to substitute.

For a couple saying, “We want the most romantic Paris stay possible, with Avenue Montaigne and a real Eiffel-view category,” we would choose Hôtel Plaza Athénée.

If neither description sounds quite right, compare both against Cheval Blanc or Four Seasons George V before booking — those hotels solve different needs again.
